Honeycomb.ai is an amazing app, created to make the life of people with food restrictions, a little easier when it comes to the challenge of finding restaurants that offer the kind of food they need. Honeycomb.ai supports 29+ of the most common allergens and ingredients and can be customized by categorizing these ingredients for users into Avoidance, Mild Intolerance or Severe Allergy.
During the COVID crisis, several businesses had to close and the food options became even more limited but, Honeycomb.ai did not abandon their public. With a series of updates, they did everything to keep their users informed and able to order their specific food choices from their homes.
We had the opportunity to ask Tamir Barzilai, CEO & Co-founder of Honeycomb.ai, a few questions about the new updates and how the respons has been so far.
"The cloud of COVID-19 that has settled over us has brought with it levels of uncertainty that we have not seen in a long time. As someone with an autoimmune disease with dietary implications, COVID-19 has added an additional layer onto what was already a difficult process - going out (or rather, ordering food) while having dietary restrictions. My co-founder Ashaya Sharma (a computer engineering graduate from UBC) and I joined forces in 2016 to solve a problem of going out to eat with dietary needs - building one interface that can accommodate any diet or allergen, any time, anywhere. Solving that problem proved to be much more challenging than what you thought, but we persisted and continued developing version after version, eventually getting it as close as possible to an ideal solution. 2019 was our best year yet, breaking records and signing up household names as clients - think Nuba, Virtuous Pie, Tractor Foods, etc.
2020 began with an expansion into Victoria and right before COVID-19 hit we had a foot in Toronto. As soon as the shutdowns began, we realized that the need for our service was required more than ever. We made changes to our app on iOS and released an updated version that puts delivery and takeout from UberEats, Doordash, and SkiptheDishes at the forefront of the experience. Simply put, you can now create a dietary profile based on your specific allergies and preferences, then browse restaurants that are currently open during COVID-19, view relevant information related to the suitability of the restaurant and menu items, and ultimately navigate directly to the respective delivery platform to place your order."
"Our customers have responded very positively to the "delivery/takeout primary" update. Browsing restaurants on delivery apps with allergies or specific diets can be very challenging and Honeycomb adds an augment that helps you save time and mitigate uncertainty in the decision making process. People with Celiac Disease definitely know how to cook at home, due to the lack of suitable/safe options available to them at restaurants - however, we have noticed an increase in interest in this diet segment because we found that people eventually get tired of cooking at home and want to order something from outside. Honeycomb is proud to support the BC Chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association and offers a web directory of suitable restaurants in the Metro Vancouver area on bcceliac.ca - for a more personalized experience, downloading the iOS app is your best bet. Having a database of 100% Gluten-free restaurants and restaurants that have dedicated preparation methods for gluten-free meals helps inform the Celiac community in a meaningful way."
"Helping us is as simple as helping your local restaurant. Download Honeycomb for FREE from the App Store on iOS (or visit honeycomb.ai for more info), create an account with your dietary profile and start browsing/ordering from restaurants you haven't tried before. Leaving a review is another way to help because our app actually offers "peer reviews", where someone with a peanut allergy can view what other users with peanut allergies had to say about their experience at a particular restaurant. For restaurants, we are waiving our sign up fee for the first year, no strings attached. Restaurants can sign up for FREE at honeycomb.ai/business
Note that we curate each restaurant in the app in order to only recommend restaurants that have diet-friendly options. This is to ensure an optimal experience for both customers and restaurants."
